Oruzogo gorilla family –Ruhija area
The Oruzogo gorilla group is one of the biggest families in the Ruhija area and also Bwindi National Park. It was officially opened for gorilla trekking in 2011. Oruzogo is famous for its playful members.
Originally, it had a composition of 22 mountain gorillas but later reduced to about 17 due to unavoidable factors like fights, splits, and others.
Oruzogo is led by Tibirikwata, the dominant silverback in the family. Tibirikwata collaborates with other male mountain gorillas in the group including Busungu, Kaganga, and Bwoba.
Considering his strategic leadership, Oruzogo family has kept expanding and also welcomed newborns including twins in 2013.
During the actual gorilla trekking session, expect to find not only adult females, males, but also infants.
The word “Oruzogo” is from the local plant that is located where this gorilla family was originally spotted by park trackers.
Bitukura Family
Bitukura derives its name from the river where it was originally spotted by the Bwindi park trackers. Habituation exercise began in 2007 and successfully, Bitukura was ready for gorilla trekking in October 2008.
Bitukura is one of the few most peaceful families found in Bwindi. Originally, the group comprised of 24 mountain gorillas but reduced to 14 individuals.
The group composition features adult females, males, and infants/juveniles. Bitukura falls under the leadership of Ndahura silverback gorilla.
Kyaguriro
Created in 1999, Kyaguriro family is dedicated for research in Ruhija, Bwindi National Park. It had over 20 mountain gorillas under Rukina silberback, but unfortunately he was struck by lightning.
Mukiza silverback succeeded the leadership in 2016 although he faced internal conflicts leading to splits.
Today, Kyaguriro has two sub-gorilla families namely Kyaguriro A and Kyaguriro B –currently referred to as the Mukiza gorilla family.
Mukisa Gorilla Family
Mukisa was originally part of the larger Kyaguriro gorilla group. It split under Mukisa silverback after the death of the main leader of the Kyaguriro family.
At the time of break away, Mukisa went with some of the members. Today, visitors on Bwindi gorilla trekking safaris can explore Mukisa family as an independent group.
