Everything About Nyerere National Park, the Wonder in the Southern Tanzania Safari Circuit

Where is the Nyerere located?

Nyerere National Park is located in the Southeastern Tanzania circuit. From Dar-es-Salaam, this park is about 230 km to its Mtemere gate. The park was carved out from the vast Selous Game Reserve, which is found in the Southern circuit of Tanzania.

History

Nyerere National Park was formed after it emerged with Tanzania’s extensive Selous Game Reserve, which was designated as a reserve in 1922.

Selous became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, and by 2019, it had attained national park status following a reclassification by Tanzania’s park authorities.

The merger was intended to enhance tourism and conservation in the protected area. The present Nyerere National Park derives its name from Julius Nyerere, the former and first president of Tanzania.

He helped Tanzania to attain its independence from British colonial rule in 1961, and the park is named after him as a way to commemorate his legacy.
