Motor vehicles constructed to carry passengers and dual-purpose cars should maintain a maximum speed limit of 30km/h on urban routes and then 50km/h when on highways traversing urban areas.

Motorcycles/tricycles & quadricycles must maintain a speed limit of 30km/h in urban areas and 50km/h when on the highways of urban areas.

Public service vehicles & private omnibuses with a seating capacity of 8pax in addition to drivers must maintain a maximum speed limit of 30km/h in urban areas and 50km/h along the highways of urban areas.

Motor vehicles and dual-purpose cars drawing trailers must keep a speed limit of 30km/h in urban areas and 50km/h on the highways.

Light good vehicles 30km/h in urban areas and 50km/h when on highways of urban towns.

Medium goods vehicles should keep a speed limit of 30km/h in urban areas and 50km/h on the highways.

Heavy goods vehicles should maintain a speed limit of 30 km/h on urban routes and 40km/h on urban highways.

Tractors when drawing trailers plus engineering plants must all keep a maximum speed limit of 30km in urban area routes and 30 km/h even along the highway routes in urban areas.

Additional Road Traffic Rules and Regulations/Laws

Unlicensed or uninsured car fines range from UGX 200,000 to 600,000 or imprisonment of 1-2 years.

Injury or death caused due to careless driving attracts fines of UGX 1,500,000 to UGX 4,000,000 or imprisonment of 2-5 years.

Careless driving fines range from UGX 1,200,000 to 1,800,000 plus imprisonment of 2-3 years.

Not wearing seatbelts attracts fines of UGX 80,000.

Using a telephone when driving fine of UGX 2,000,000 or imprisonment of 1 year or both.

Pollution of the environment also referred to as littering –the fine is UGX 6,000,000.

Using banned plastic bags under 30 microns attracts a charge of UGX 100,000,000/

Aggravated environment pollution fine UGX 6,000,000,000.

The drunk driving fine is UGX 500,000 with mandatory court appearance and potential license suspension.
