Gorilla Habituation Uganda | Packages, Cost, Bwindi (2026)
Gorilla Habituation Uganda: Beyond normal gorilla trekking, Uganda is also popular as the only destination to experience gorilla habituation.
Only offered in the Rushaga region of Bwindi, mountain gorilla habituation offers a long, intensive interaction with a semi-wild family of mountain gorillas. It is a largely conservation-focused experience strictly conducted by up to 4pax each day.
Uganda is one of the East African countries where travelers come mainly to do gorilla trekking in the two parks, that is Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga National Park.
Uganda has half of the total 1063 mountain gorillas in the world. These endangered mountain gorillas are only found in Uganda, Rwanda in Volcanoes National Park, and DRC in Virunga National Park.
Gorilla Habituation is one of the activities that is done in Uganda, whereby gorillas are made to be comfortable with humans without attacking them.
Gorilla habituation in Uganda is only done in the Rushaga sector in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Gorillas that are trekked are already habituated and got used to humans. This is not the same case with the habituation experience, since these gorillas are less used to humans. They are just teaching them to be comfortable with people.
A traveler spends 4 hours with the gorillas during habituation. Just like trekking, a visitor is supposed to have a permit from UWA or a trusted tour operator, and this is supposed to be done in advance, like 2 months or 3 months.
What is the Gorilla Habituation process?
The gorilla process takes a significant period of time. The process of habituating a family of mountain gorillas takes at least 2 to 3 years. Chimpanzees may even take up to 7 years.
The ultimate goal can be achieved through constant visits to the habitat where these primates live, and this is done by researchers and assistants. They spend time in their presence each day observing how they behave, and gradually, they get used to human presence.
What is a habituated gorilla?
A habituated gorilla is a gorilla that has undergone the process of habituation. It is already set for gorilla tourism or a gorilla trekking experience.
How many habituated gorilla families are there in Bwindi?
As of 2024, a total of about 21 habituated groups of mountain gorillas survive in the jungles of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Park. These groups are open for gorilla trekking in the 4 sectors: Ruhija, Buhoma, Nkuringo, and Rushaga.
What is the difference between Gorilla Trekking and Gorilla Habituation – Uganda?
Gorilla trekking is done for one hour with habituated gorillas who are used to people, compared to gorilla habituation, where travelers spend 4 hours.
Gorilla trekking can be done in all four sectors of Bwindi and Mgahinga, which is not the case with habituation, which is done only in the Rushaga sector. Gorilla habituation is costs much than the gorilla trekking which costs $ 800 per person.
